I may not be a Social Media Expert but…
EXPERT. What does the word Expert or Guru mean to you?
There are many expert/gurus these days, actually too many for my taste. We see 19 year olds with MBA Expert on their business cards, we see people new to an industry who call themselves expert/guru.
Let’s take a step back for moment. Isn’t being an expert or guru reserved for those who work a lifetime trying to improve and innovate an industry? And after their body of work has been proven, whether living or dead is labeled by their peers as an Expert or Guru?
I am not a self-professed expert/guru, but I strive to be amongst the elite who have passion and poise to continue to evolve the craze we have defined as Social Media
Being a Powerhouse in the field Social Media, I challenge the status quo. Being able to take calculated risks and keeping things moving forward with results helps me to provide unique changes to my clients that invigorate, provoke and stimulate new thinking and open new avenues of thought and opportunities.
As technology is a constant me too product; it is important to be able to help my clients understand which companies are the innovative minds of their industry and why. Tailoring a partnership in such a way that it can help catapult their brand and marketing into the for-front leadership position of the social media industry is what I strive to do for my clients. This then motivates them to show their clients that, in addition to not only do caring about their business, want to help create a better product for them, thus helping to cement the brand of their company deeper into their minds.
So, what is Social Media Expert? Let’s break down these three keywords;
1.)Social – friendly, outgoing, extrovert, engaging, sociable, well-liked, social.
A group of people assembled to promote sociability and communal activity. Social events can be with a live audience, engaging in on-line community, interactive communications, mobile connectivity, webinars, chat rooms; any format with a social atmosphere to relate and communicate with people.
2.)Media – a method of transporting information to the masses or target audience
Communication channels that release content including; news, entertainment, education, data, white paper, information, promotional messages, and includes every broadcasting and narrow-casting medium such as newspapers, magazines, TV, radio, billboards, Advertising, direct mail, telephone, text messaging, fax, website ,blogging internet.
3.)Expert – knowing you know what you know equal to or better than others through prolonged experience and practice in a specific field.
The definition of expert is well established by experience, knowledge and longevity in that particular field. It is not necessary for a person to have a professional or academic qualification for them to be accepted as an expert. Seasoned, reliable, thorough, one who sees the big-picture, gifted with common sense and a “can-do” attitude are some attributes of an expert.
Experts in any field of expertise share these common characteristics; experience, longevity, knowledge, and skills, that is, being an expert of a method, practice, or system, which distinguishes them from novices and less experienced people. Additionally, persistence, tenacity, reliability, dedicated, trustworthy, and a winning attitude you become someone others want to work with and value your expertise.
Thus, Social Media Expert is one who can talk with people, learn about them, find out what they like, what their needs are and try to be of help.
By applying your expertise and using a media-driven platform you can engage your clients in participating in the multi-dimensional arena of Social Media. Harness new avenues such as; blogging, on-line social communities, and contributing information to let people know more about you.
It appears then, that in some way we are already using the social media platform in our businesses. I was able to find my niche; help companies with new avenues of opportunity, revitalize stale brands, find waste, train and empower employees, and gain a sustainable ROI. Dig down and really identify the elements or the core of your expertise so you can stand out from among the crowd of “experts.
I may not be a “Social Media Expert”, by internet terms, but I am a different kind of Social Media Expert applying what I know to help my clients.
Learning and being part of a great on-line community allows me the opportunity to learn more about Social Media and its applications in the world of technology and online, so that eventually I can merge the two into my own definition of a Social Media Expert.
